Why European Wooden Toys Last Longer

Tricycle Add-on for the leg&go Balance Bike 3in1

Leo's wooden blocks are 5 years old. They've been thrown, stepped on, used as hammers, and left outside in the rain more than once.

They still look fine. A bit worn, sure, but perfectly usable. Sofia plays with them now.

Compare that to the plastic toys we've bought over the years. Most broke within months. The ones that didn't break just... stopped working. Batteries died, lights stopped flashing, sounds got annoying.

Why wooden toys are different

Wooden toys don't do anything. They don't light up, make noise, or tell kids how to play with them.

That sounds boring, but it's actually the point. A wooden block can be a car, a phone, a building, or a spaceship. Kids have to use their imagination.

Leo plays longer with his simple wooden toys than he ever did with the flashy plastic ones. And he plays more creatively.

The cost math

A good wooden toy costs more upfront. Leo's wooden blocks were £35. Cheap plastic blocks? £8.

But here's what happened:

  • Plastic blocks: Broke within a year, bought replacements twice = £24 total, then thrown away
  • Wooden blocks: Still perfect after 5 years, now Sofia uses them = £35 total, will last years more

The wooden blocks cost less per year of use. Plus, we can sell them secondhand when both kids are done. The plastic ones went in the bin.

What we actually stock

We don't sell every wooden toy we find. We only stock what I'd buy for Leo and Sofia:

  • Wooden climbing ladders (Pikler style) - Leo learned to climb on one, now Sofia uses it
  • Wooden play kitchens - Both kids still play with theirs daily
  • Wooden balance beams - Great for rainy days indoors
  • Simple wooden blocks and puzzles - The basics that actually get used

Safety matters

European wooden toys meet strict EU safety standards. Non-toxic finishes, no sharp edges, no small parts that break off.

When Sofia was teething, she chewed on everything. I never worried about the wooden toys because I knew they were safe.

The honest truth

Wooden toys aren't magic. They're just well-made, safe, and last long enough to be worth the money.

If you're tired of replacing broken plastic toys every few months, try one good wooden toy instead. See if your kids actually play with it more.
