They come from The Widget Factory in Tartu, Estonia, the same manufacturer behind Norwegian military combat boots and a factory that has worked with iconic names including Dr. Martens and Rossignol. The name “Widgets” comes from the creative quarter in Tartu where the factory is based — an area that during Soviet times was used to manufacture refrigeration equipment and secret submarine parts, and to mislead the public, non-functioning umbrellas and zippers. Today it’s home to artist studios, designer workshops, cafes, and one of Estonia’s finest shoe factories.
